SPEAKER BIOS
Calvin Darden, Sr.
Calvin Darden, Sr., serves on the board of directors for Target Corporation, Coca-Cola Enterprises, and Cardinal Health, as well as on the board of trustees of his alma mater, Canisius College. He retired in 2005 as Senior Vice President of Operations at UPS, the largest express and package carrier in the world. Starting his career there unloading trucks in 1971, he quickly rose through the ranks without ever asking for a promotion. From customer service supervisor to district manager to vice president, he has always been noted for his work ethic and business acumen.
Mr. Darden has received numerous awards and honors. He was named as number 8 on Fortune magazine's list of "50 Most Powerful Black Executives." In 2000, he carried the Olympic torch on the route to the Summer Games in Sydney, Australia. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from Canisius College and Cambridge College.
He continues to engage in his community. He established the Atlanta Police Foundation, chairs the Atlanta Beltline Project, and started the Darden Development Group, which renovates foreclosed homes and helps struggling families to become homeowners.
Mr. Darden lives with his wife Gail in a suburb of Atlanta, GA.
Cory A. Booker
Cory A. Booker has served as the mayor of Newark, New Jersey, since July 1, 2006. His Administration has made great strides in crime reduction, public/private partnerships for parks, and affordable housing. In addition, he is a stalwart advocate of breaking the cycle of incarceration, launching the Newark Prisoner Reentry Initiative to address reentry on a citywide scale.
Mayor Booker's political career began in 1998, after serving as Staff Attorney for the Urban Justice Center in Newark. He rose to prominence as Newark's Central Ward Councilman, where he earned a reputation as a leader with innovative ideas and bold actions, from increasing security in public housing to building new playgrounds. For this work, he has been recognized in numerous publications, including, among others, Time, Esquire, New Jersey Monthly, Black Enterprise and The New York Times Magazine.
Reflecting his commitment to education, Mayor Booker is a member of numerous boards and advisory committees including Democrats for Education Reform, Columbia University Teachers' College Board of Trustees and the Black Alliance for Educational Options. Mayor Booker received his B. A. and M. A. from Stanford University, a B. A. in Modern History at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and completed his law degree at Yale University.
Bill Miller
During his 35 year career as an award-winning singer and songwriter, Bill Miller has composed, recorded, produced and performed music that is as true to his American roots as it is inspirational to his audience. As an acknowledged master of the Native American flute, Bill has earned three Grammy awards (including 2010 Grammy for Native American Music Album) along with multiple Native American Music awards in recognition of his songwriting.
In the midst of his abundant artistic life, Bill is also a sought-after guest speaker at corporate, collegiate, and community venues nationwide. As a master storyteller, he uses three elements, his heritage, life experience and spiritual path, to share his message of transformation and reconciliation.
Bill Miller is also an accomplished visual artist and composer. His paintings and drawings are held in collections across the U.S., and his brilliant symphonic composition, The Last Stand, has been performed before sold-out audiences in the U.S. and Israel.
He lives in Nashville with his wife, Renee of 32 years along with their 3 birth children, 2 adopted children and grandchildren.
Bart Lubow
Bart Lubow began his career in criminal justice at the New York City Legal Aid Society in 1974, first as a social worker for the Criminal Defense Division and later as Director of Special Defender Services, where he began developing social work interventions to enhance representation in criminal cases.
In 1984, Mr. Lubow was named Director of Alternatives to Incarceration for New York State by Governor Mario M. Cuomo, and subsequently assumed responsibility for the regulation, funding and oversight of probation services in 58 local departments when his unit merged the the Division of Probation.
In 1992, Mr. Lubow became a Senior Associate at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, where he has been responsible for designing and managing juvenile justice reform initiatives and other community justice and safety efforts. For the past 18 years, he has designed and managed the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI). In 2009, Mr. Lubow was named Director of the Juvenile Justice Strategy Group, providing consulting services to states and localities seeking to reduce reliance on incarceration.
Mr. Lubow completed his undergraduate and graduate work at Cornell University. He serves on a number of local and national boards and has published multiple articles on justice system reform.
Timothy F. Lisante
Timothy F. Lisante has worked for the New York City Department of Education (DOE) for the past 32 years. Since 1988, he has led alternative programs and currently serves as a Deputy Superintendent of 53 alternative sites including 13 programs in adult corrections (Rikers Island) and 8 Juvenile Justice sites. He has been a teacher, assistant principal, and principal at the Rikers Island Academies. He has a B.A. from Catholic University in Special Education, an M.A. from New York University in Special Education, and earned his Ph.D. in Education with a dissertation topic entitled Designing and Implementing Education Programs for Incarcerated Youth.
Dr. Lisante is the chairperson of the Correctional Education Association (CEA) Jails Education workgroup. He has presented workshops throughout the country, visiting correctional education programs in 10 states as well as Ireland and Japan.
He has served as an adjunct professor at Hunter College teaching graduate courses in special education.
Tim lives with his wife Margaret and their three teenage sons in Floral Park, NY.
