PRE-RELEASE ADVOCACY
Friends' work with sentenced adolescents ages 16 to 18 begins at two facilities on Rikers Island - at the Eric M. Taylor Center (EMTC), which houses sentenced young men, and at the Rose M. Singer Center, which accommodates young women. The New York City Department of Education operates schools within these facilities, one of which is Island Academy.

Prior to their release from jail, young people participate in individualized meetings, including specialized workshops for young women and teenage fathers. During the sessions, Friends' staff come to know their circumstances and determine the triage necessary to assist them upon release, such as access to housing, health care and what basic documents they would need.

These early contacts help to ease their transition back to the community and strengthen the ties for a continuing relationship with Friends.
